I am thrilled with my solar panel system and incredibly grateful I installed it when I did, especially before the recent electricity price hikes. This decision saved me from the enormous bills that many of my friends and family have had to endure. My motivation wasn’t solely financial; I care deeply about the planet and strive to minimise my impact on it. Meet Maureen, a satisfised NRG Panel customer from County Louth, Maureen had a 10-panel solar PV system and a hot water diverter installed by NRG Panel. Her decision to go solar was driven by both financial and environmental motivations.

In February 2020, Maureen reached out to us to determine if solar panels were a good fit for her needs. She had been researching solar energy for some time and had gathered a wealth of information online. After careful consideration, she decided to make the switch and hasn’t looked back since.

Maureen’s motivation to switch to solar power was rooted in both financial and environmental concerns. She recognised the potential savings on her electricity bills and saw an opportunity to invest in a technology that would reduce her long-term energy costs. The prospect of generating her own electricity and becoming less reliant on the grid was a significant financial incentive.

On the environmental front, Maureen was driven by a desire to reduce her carbon footprint. She understood the impact of fossil fuels on the planet and wanted to do her part in promoting renewable energy. By opting for a solar PV system and a hot water diverter, she aimed to contribute to a more sustainable future while enjoying the immediate benefits of clean energy.

what did MAUREEN get installed

After a consultation, our engineer designed a system tailored to Maureen’s roof size and her specific hot water and electricity needs.

Maureen’s home initially had a B3 BER (Building Energy Rating). With the installation of the 10-panel solar system, her rating improved to a B2, significantly enhancing the efficiency of her home. To further elevate her home’s efficiency Maureen has since upgraded her windows to triple glazing and her front door to a composite solid door, while she hasn’t had a new BER done since the solar installation, we estimate that with her upgrades she would be sitting on a B2 or an A2. A modernised heating system like a heat pump could bring her up to an A2 or A1, making her home the same efficiency as that of a new build.

THE PROBLEM – high bills 

Maureen had grown frustrated with her continually rising electricity bills, which seemed to increase month after month. Fed up, she decided it was time to start producing her own electricity for free from the sun. Well-versed in the benefits of installing solar panels, she was motivated by both environmental and financial reasons. While environmental concerns played a role in her decision, the potential savings were a major factor.

Maureen is delighted with her decision to go solar, especially since she took advantage of the government incentives before electricity prices skyrocketed. This timing meant she didn’t feel the financial pinch of the increases, and the savings have been substantial.

The Solution – solar installation

While Maureen’s initial investment was significant, she understood that the long-term benefits would outweigh the upfront costs. Additionally, she was eligible for the €2,400 SEAI grant, which NRG Panel deducted directly from her initial quotation. This meant she didn’t need to finance the lump sum of the grant herself.

We estimated the payback period for Maureen’s solar system to be approximately 5-7 years. Given that solar panels have a lifespan of around 30 years, Maureen is poised to reap substantial financial benefits. Having had the system installed since 2020, she is already on her way to enjoying these gains.

There is an opinion out there that Solar Panels (Solar PV) would not work in Ireland, this stems from people thinking that we don’t get enough sunlight in the summer, never mind the winter for solar panels to produce energy.

This however is not true, solar PV works in daylight as opposed to the heat from the sun. Ireland has the same annual Irradiation levels as many parts of central Europe, ranging from 1200 kWhr/m2/yr in the south of the country to 1000 kWhr/m2/yr in the north of the country, a good average for the entire country is 1100 kWhr/m2/yr.

If you consider our typical winters would not be as bad as many parts of central Europe, our mild climate is ideal for solar PV as we never get too hot or too cold and we have good light levels for a large part of the year.

Solar PV is a clean source of energy  – It uses the sun’s energy to generate clean green electricity that can be used directly in place of conventionally generated power in your home or business. It is one of the easiest and most beneficial renewable energy technologies to add to any building, whether commercial or domestic.

Solar PV saves you money  – You not only does it save money on your electricity bills, but you are protecting yourself against inevitable price rises from energy suppliers and potential energy shortages in the future.

Solar panels reduce your carbon footprint – Each unit of electricity generated by a solar PV system reduces the amount of CO2 emitted from conventional power stations. Over 25 years, a 2KW solar panel array will generate over 36,000 units of electricity and save over 20 tonnes of CO2.

Solar panels are versatile  – It can be installed at almost any location; usually mounted on a building’s roof, but they can also be  placed on simple ground-mounted structures.

Solar PV modules have a working lifetime of 35 years and beyond. As the photovoltaic effect is a naturally occurring phenomenon, there is nothing to say that the panels will not continue to create electricity for as long as they are in sunlight. A solar panel system that is designed, installed, and maintained well will operate very efficiently for at least 30 years. The best way to ensure and extend the life and effectiveness of your PV system is to purchase quality components from a reputable company that will guarantee that your system is correctly installed and commissioned.

Solar panel prices Ireland can vary greatly. It is really important that when you are comparing quotations for solar panels you compare like with like on all components of the system, there are cheaper models on the market however, these are not of the same quality or efficiency. You also need to consider the company you are dealing with, is this an established company with quality customer service that will be there in 5-10 years should you have any issues with your solar panels down the line.

It is very hard to give a direct quote as it all depends on the type of system the consultant designs for you, but prices start from around €7,500 for a 2.5kWp system before any grant subsidies.

The solar PV system designed for you is dependent on a number of factors including your electricity usage, lifestyle and the details of your home and roof, this is why it is important to have a consultation to ensure we are offering you a bespoke system specifically designed for your needs to maximise your return on investment.
