Billy got in contact with us back in February 2020 as he wanted to see are solar panels worth it for him. he had a €200 bimonthly bill and wanted to reduce that. He had researched ways to reduce his bills and decided that solar panels where the solution to his problems.
Billy is living in a two storey terrace house in Co. Clare. The roof was tiled and was east/west facing which is still a good orientation for solar panels, most people think you can only put solar PV on the south roof but this is incorrect, a correctly size system split on the east and west roofs can still produce some impressive results. Billy’s BER rating was a C1 prior to the install and the panels brought him up to a B2 making his home almost as well rated as a new build. Billy qualified for the SEAI grant incentive of €1,800 for panel only installation. This grant can increase up to €3,000 if you add a battery system to your installation. We would only recommend a battery if you have a large system or are out of the home a lot as if not then the battery wouldn’t have the excess energy to charge.
UPDATE 2022: Exciting news as the Solar PV grants have just changed for 2022. They have scrapped the BER requirement and the 2011 year of construction requirement.
New solar grant eligibility: Home must be built and occupied prior to 2021 & and you must also never have been in receipt of a PV grant at this address in the past.
New solar grant amount: €900 per kWp up to 2kWp and €300 for every additional kWp up to 4kWp. – No grant aid available for battery
After a consultation, our energy expert designed a bespoke system for Billy. They decided that the best option based on the monthly electricity usage, lifestyle, roof space and orientation would be a 10 panel system split on the east/west facing roof with the inverter installed in attic. Billy was using oil to heat is water and wanted to get away from that as much as he could so we added an Eddi diverter to help reduce his dependence on oil. An Eddi diverter is a device that diverts any surplus energy produced by the solar panels to heat your water tank after your consumption needs are satisfied.
The system was installed in March 2020 in just one day. Our aim was to save this customer on money on his electricity his bills and provide him with some free hot water throughout the year, all the while reducing his carbon footprint and increasing his BER rating.
Thanks to our handy solar PV app we can see that Billy pays 0.17c per unit for his electricity – as of 11th August 2021 he has already produced 1,566kwh of free energy in 2021 equating to approximately €266 in savings so far this year. With a system sized at 3.1kWp split over an east west roof we would expect annual production of approx. 2,400kWh over the year meaning that Billy will hopefully see annual savings of approx. €408 by the end of 2021.
We caught up with Billy since the solar panel installation he said he was extremely happy with the professional service and the products provided.
He informed us that “ the service I have received is by far the best of any service provider in the country”.
