Antoinette got in contact with us back in 2019 as she wanted to see are solar panels worth it for her. Living in a large busy house, she found her bills were quite high. She chose solar panels because she liked the idea of generating her own electricity and reducing her dependency on the grid.
Antoinette is living in a detached 5 bed home in Co. Laois. Prior to having solar panels installed in her home her BER rating was a B1 and she was spending around €230.00 Bimonthly on her electricity. Her home is facing east, and she has a tiled roof with some Velux windows.
As her BER was above a C3 after installation and her home was built prior to 2011 she qualified for the maximum SEAI grant incentive of €3,000 for panel and battery installation.
UPDATE 2022: Exciting news as the Solar PV grants have just changed for 2022. They have scrapped the BER requirement and the 2011 year of construction requirement.
New solar grant eligibility: Home must be built and occupied prior to 2021 & and you must also never have been in receipt of a PV grant at this address in the past.
New solar grant amount: €900 per kWp up to 2kWp and €300 for every additional kWp up to 4kWp. – No grant aid available for battery
After a consultation, our energy expert designed a bespoke system for Antoinette. They decided that the best option based on the monthly electricity usage, lifestyle, roof space and orientation would be a 16 panel system on the split on the east and west facing roofs, the inverter was installed in the attic. Antoinette was interested in storing excess energy when they were out of the home so we added a 4.8kw battery, we also added an Eddi hot water diverter to help with her hot water and reducing her dependence on fossil fuels, we did this as she had quite a large system and was out of the home a good bit so the solar panels would have time to charge the battery and heat the water for when they got home from work.
The installation team arrived in the early hours of the morning and were finished in just couple of hours. Our aim was to save this customer up to 50% on her bills and to also provide her with some hot water, all the while reducing her carbon footprint and increasing her BER rating.
We caught up with Antoinette since the solar panel installation, she said that the system has been very effective, and they are looking forward to the ongoing savings on their electricity and hot water bills.
