The following case study was conducted by NRG Panel in 2021. This case study contains imagery and details of a genuine solar panel installation carried out by our team.

Karen got in contact with us back in July 2020 as she wanted to see are solar panels worth it for her, she had been looking in to them for a while and had done her research. She was sick of her high electric bills which increased even more over the pandemic as she had started working from home and the kids where home also.

Karen was living in a 2010 two storey dormer house. Her roof was slated and was south facing which is the ideal orientation for solar panels. Prior to the installation Karen’s BER rating was a B2 and moved to B1 with solar – With a BER of B1 Karen qualified for the SEAI grant incentive of €1,800 for panel only installation, It is worth noting that this grant can increase up to €3,000 if you add a battery system to your installation.

UPDATE 2022: Exciting news as the Solar PV grants have just changed for 2022. They have scrapped the BER requirement and the 2011 year of construction requirement.

New solar grant eligibility: Home must be built and occupied prior to 2021 & and you must also never have been in receipt of a PV grant at this address in the past.

New solar grant amount: €900 per kWp up to 2kWp and €300 for every additional kWp up to 4kWp. – No grant aid available for battery 

After a consultation, our energy expert designed a bespoke system for Karen. They decided that the best option based on the monthly electricity usage, lifestyle, roof space and orientation would be a 16 panel system on the back south facing roof with the inverter installed in attic.  Karen was interested in heating her water, so we added on an Eddi diverter and this was installed in the hot-press.

The system was installed in December 2020 in just one day. Our aim was to save this customer up to 50% on her bills and to also provide her with some hot water all the while reducing her carbon footprint and increasing her BER rating.

We caught up with Karen since the solar panel install and here is what she had to say:

We are over the moon with our installation, our bills have been cut by over 50% and we are only coming into the summer months, the constant flow of hot water is a god send, no more waiting on the immersion to heat up the tank for hours.

We are completely obsessed with the app, we monitor it daily to see what we are producing its so satisfying to watch.  We have become more clever with how we use our energy we tend to stagger high consumption items like the dishwasher/tumber dryer so that we get the most out of the energy produced.

We find that we have sent a good bit back to the grid in the summer months so far so we cannot wait to see what the ESB will offer for our excess when the payback is introduced, if its low, we may consider a battery – its something we are going to continue to monitor over the coming months to see which option will be more viable for us.

Over all NRG Panel and the team have been great, from the consultant right through to the lads on the day we never felt pressured or over promised to, and that’s what stood out for us, it was the honesty.
