The following case study was conducted by NRG Panel in 2021. This case study contains imagery and details of a genuine solar panel installation carried out by our team.

Paddy got in contact with us back in July 2020 as he wanted to see are solar panels worth it for him, he was sick of his huge electricity bills and done his research on ways to reduce them, he had heard of solar panels but didn’t know enough so he got in touch with NRG Panel as a they were a local company and decided to go ahead and get the ball rolling with a consultation.
Paddy is living in a 1990’s 4 bed detached house with his wife and two kids. Roof was slate and had multiple roof spaces – we chose the two with the best orientation for solar panels. Prior to the installation Paddy’s BER rating was C2 and moved to B3 with solar, those letters add a lot of value to his property as it is now almost as well rated as a new build. With a BER of B3 Paddy qualified for the SEAI grant incentive of €3,000 for panel and battery installation.
UPDATE 2022: Exciting news as the Solar PV grants have just changed for 2022. They have scrapped the BER requirement and the 2011 year of construction requirement.
New solar grant eligibility: Home must be built and occupied prior to 2021 & and you must also never have been in receipt of a PV grant at this address in the past.
New solar grant amount: €900 per kWp up to 2kWp and €300 for every additional kWp up to 4kWp. – No grant aid available for battery
After a consultation, our energy expert designed a bespoke system for Paddy. They decided that the best option based on the monthly electricity usage, lifestyle, roof space and orientation would be a 16 panel system split over the house and garage, 6 panels where installed on south east facing garage roof and 10 panels on the south west facing house roof with the inverter and battery installed in attic. Paddy was sick of using oil to heat his water, so we added on an Eddi diverter and this was installed in the hot press.
The system was installed in September 2020 in just one day. Our aim was to save this customer up to 50% on his bills and to also provide him with some hot water, all the while reducing his carbon footprint and increasing his BER rating.
We caught up with Paddy since the solar panel installation and he said that he is delighted with the whole thing. He is now running at 55% self-efficiency, and he has also got oceans of hot water, the battery is great as both him and his wife are out of the home during the day, so the excess energy is being stored for when they come home in the evenings – most days the dishwasher, cooker and kettle are all running off free energy.
Paddy said he wishes he had made the move years ago; the savings are beyond what he had imagined, and he is also excited to see what the micro generation support scheme will add to his savings.
